Kedarkantha, located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttarakhand, is one of India’s most loved beginner-friendly Himalayan treks. Famous as the “Queen of Winter Treks,” it offers panoramic views of snow-capped peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Yamunotri. The trek begins at Sankri village and passes through lush forests, serene alpine lakes, and vibrant meadows before culminating at the Kedarkantha summit (12,500 ft). Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Dehradun → Sankri
Start your journey early from Dehradun at 7:00 AM. Enjoy a scenic 220 km drive (approx. 10 hours) passing Mussoorie, Mori, and Naitwar, along the Yamuna and Tons rivers. Enter Govind National Park and reach Sankri, a quaint Himalayan village that serves as the starting point for several iconic treks. Explore the village, enjoy dinner, and stay overnight at a comfortable hotel.
Day 2: Sankri → Juda Ka Talab (6,400 → 9,100 ft, 4 km)
Trek through dense pine and maple forests, crossing small streams and wooden bridges. Stop at forest clearings for rest and panoramic views of Swargarohini peaks. Reach Juda Ka Talab, a serene alpine lake surrounded by forests and snow-covered meadows. Set up camp, enjoy a bonfire, and stargaze in the clear mountain sky.
Day 3: Juda Ka Talab → Kedarkantha Base Camp (9,100 → 11,500 ft, 4 km)
Start early to enjoy the sunrise over the Himalayan peaks. Trek through cedar, oak, and maple forests, then emerge into open alpine meadows with breathtaking vistas. Arrive at Kedarkantha Base Camp and relax in tents while soaking in the spectacular surroundings.
Day 4: Kedarkantha Base Camp → Kedarkantha Summit → Juda Ka Talab (12,500 → 9,100 ft, 8 km round trip)
Summit Kedarkantha early in the morning and enjoy panoramic views of the Garhwal Himalayas, including Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Yamunotri peaks. Descend carefully to Juda Ka Talab, passing through forests and meadows. Spend the night at camp, enjoying a warm meal and the serene alpine lake.
Day 5: Juda Ka Talab → Sankri → Dehradun (9,100 → 6,400 ft, 4 km trek + 220 km drive)
Descend to Sankri through scenic trails, reflecting on your Himalayan adventure. After lunch in Sankri, drive back to Dehradun (approx. 10 hours), retracing the stunning landscapes you passed earlier. Arrive in Dehradun in the evening with unforgettable memories of Kedarkantha.
